„Ökologie“ und „Technik“ sind nicht nur Kernthemen des ÖTIs, sondern auch Themen, die es bei der Umsetzung von neuen Innovationen der Zukunft, zu verbinden
gilt. Um hier auch in der Zukunft einen aktiven Beitrag zu leisten, hat sich das ÖTI im Januar 2010 entschieden in Zukunft eng mit Herrn Albin Kälin von der EPEA-
Switzerland zusammen zu arbeiten. Damit wird das ÖTI- (Abteilung INNOVATION) sich weiter in der Gestaltung und Umsetzung von Forschungs- Entwicklungs- und Innovationsprojekten engagieren.
Die Arbeit nach dem „Cradle to Cradle“ – Prinzip soll hier die Kompetenzen des ÖTI nutzen und weiterentwickeln.

ÖTI’s core competence are Ecology and Technology aswell as Innovation, which are creating and connecting solutions for the future. To actively contribute to the future, ÖTI decided in january 2010 to cooperate with Albin Kälin and EPEA Switzerland.
The innovation departement of ÖTI will focus further in the development and implementation of research, development and innovation projects. The Cradle to Cradle Design Concept will support and develop the competences of ÖTI further.

The famous Cradle to Cradle principle defined by EPEA Internationale Umweltforschung GmbH in Hamburg at the end of the 80s provides the basic idea for a paradigm shift in industry. Cradle to Cradle ® materials and products remain in endless cycles and are environmentally beneficial and healthy for users. Cradle to Cradle ® eliminates the concept of waste.
In the early 90’s, the Swiss native Albin Kälin was the first entrepreneur to put the award winning Cradle to Cradle® vision into action with Climatex® textiles together with EPEA in Hamburg. Since 2005, Albin Kälin is one of the CEOs of EPEA Internationale Umweltforschung GmbH in Hamburg and is also carrying out this function at EPEA Nederland since its founding in 2008. He manages Professor Michael Braungart and his team in positioning the Cradle to Cradle® design worldwide and enables successful industry implementation. Over the last three years, the EPEA Internationale Umweltforschung GmbH’s primary focus is to lead the entire country of the Netherlands on the Cradle to Cradle® path. This represents a huge challenge!
Now Albin Kälin is establishing EPEA Switzerland GmbH and is returning to his homeland after years of intensive and constructive work in Hamburg and the Netherlands. The EPEA Switzerland GmbH is committed to Cradle to Cradle projects of all industries in Switzerland, Austria and in the textile industry worldwide. EPEA Switzerland will work closely with the scientific support of EPEA in Hamburg.
Albin Kälin will end his functions as CEO of EPEA International Umweltforschung GmbH and EPEA Nederland at the end of this year. Professor Michael Braungart acknowledges Albin Kälin for his very successful involvement in the past few years which have been of vital importance to the company and is looking forward to the continued partnership.
Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA) International Umweltforschung GmbH, Hamburg, was founded in 1987 by the internationally renowned Hamburg chemist Prof. Michael Braungart. They are a team of scientists and industry consultants working for an international clientele by applying the Cradle to Cradle® concept to products, processes and services. The eco-effective solutions of Cradle to Cradle® designs maximize the compatibility and performance of products with biological and technical systems. On the basis of a clear definition of components and secure material flow management, profitability, fairness and ecology are integrated into product quality, making them superior to conventional products in the market.
EPEA is pursuing the development of safe consumption and safe service products, as well as consumer satisfaction and a ridding the long-term burden on resources and the environment. Based on the idea of “Intelligent Products System” (IPS), the EPEA is pursuing the goal of maintaining the present value of all ingredients and nutrients in safe biological and technical metabolisms. EPEA is a licensee of the Cradle to Cradle® Product Certification System that has been developed by MBDC (McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, Charlottesville, USA).

Le fameux principe «Cradle to Cradle®» (du berceau au berceau), défini fin des années quatre-vingt par EPEA Internationale Umweltforschung GmbH à Hambourg, fournit l’idée de base pour un changement de paradigme dans l’industrie. Cradle to Cradle® est synonyme de produits aptes à évoluer en cycles, propices à l’environnement et sains pour l’utilisateur.
Début des années nonante, avec ses textiles primés Climatex® le Suisse Albin Kälin est le premier entrepreneur à mettre en pratique la vision «Cradle to Cradle®» en commun avec EPEA à Hambourg. Depuis 2005 Albin Kälin est un des directeurs d’EPEA Internationale Umweltforschung GmbH à Hambourg et, depuis sa création en 2008, d’EPEA Nederland. Il soutient le professeur Michael Braungart et son équipe dans leurs efforts pour positionner le concept «Cradle to Cradle®» dans le monde entier et pour l’implémenter avec succès dans l’industrie. Ces trois dernières années, ce sont les Pays-Bas qui ont été au cœur des préoccupations d’EPEA Internationale Umweltforschung GmbH. Master Thesis „Kommunikation von Cradle to Cradle®“
Im Rahmen des „Master of Advanced Studies in Communication Management and Leadership“ an der Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften (zhaw) wurde 2010 eine Masterarbeit zum Thema „ Kommunikation von Cradle to Cradle® in der Textil- und Bekleidungsindustrie – Analyse & Empfehlungen“ von Sarah Peter Vogt, einer ausgewiesenen Marketing- und Kommunikations-beraterin, geschrieben. Praxispartner für diese Arbeit war Albin Kälin, CEO von EPEA Switzerland und Cradle to Cradle®-Pionier.
Die Resultate der Arbeit geben wertvolle Einblicke, wo Cradle to Cradle® in der aktuellen Nachhaltigkeitsdebatte steht, wohin die globalen Trends gehen und wie die Kommunikation von Cradle to Cradle® in diesem Umfeld ausgerichtet werden kann.
Cradle to Cradle®, welches die Nährstoffkreisläufe der Natur als Vorbild nimmt, überzeugt in seiner Logik und Ganzheitlichkeit und entspricht dem Zeitgeist. Dabei geht es v.a. darum, den langfristigen Umbau zur Öko-Effektivität zu bewerkstelligen. Das Effizienzdenken hilft dabei als Übergangsstrategie Zeit zu gewinnen.
Bei der Kommunikation zu den Endverbrauchern wie auch zu den Herstellern wurde grosses Potenzial festgestellt. Die Autorin wendet in ihrer Arbeit Techniken der Innovationskommunikation an und zeigt somit Wege auf, wie Cradle to Cradle® für die Endverbraucher, die Hersteller wie auch den Handel erlebbar gemacht werden können.
